Building on the success of the success of the CLP-300 budget colour laser printer Samsung are now offering an affordable multifunction colour laser printer with not only printing facilities but scanning and photocopying as well. Samsung CLX-2160 toner cartridges cost a faction more than a set inkjet printer cartridges and giving the CLX-2160 a cost per page ratio of 1.8p black and 8.7 colours. This is competitive figure for black and slightly expensive colour but there are remanufactured Samsung toner cartridges available for the CLX-2160 which reduces the cost per page considerably. The most impressive feature of the Samsung CLX-2160 is its amazingly small footprint, in addition to this the built quality feels very good and not what we have come to expect from budget printers of the past. Where the CLX-2160 starts to fall down is in its printing performance, while black printing of text and graphics is reasonable the colour printing has a lot of room for improvement. Photo printing is particularly bad and the prints look grainy and spotty. The same true in terms of printing speeds, the CLX-2160 is a reasonably fast printer when printing mono, capable of printing 16ppm (pages per minute) but as soon as you introduce colour into the equation the speed drops to 4ppm. This lack of speed and lack of quality in colour prints was evident for the CLP-300 and it doesn’t look like Samsung have done anything to improve things, most likely because it would have increased the price of the printer so its horses for courses I suppose.
